Frequently Asked Questions

To be listed in the directory, one needs to be fully certified by the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) in at least one discipline. Once on the directory, they can offer to guide other services they are not fully certified in.

Within the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), there are three primary certification disciplines: Rock, Alpine, and Ski. Guides who complete all three earn the AMGA Mountain Guide certification, which also grants international recognition through the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA) as a fully certified IFMGA Mountain Guide. In addition to these tracks, the AMGA offers two standalone certifications: Certified Ice Instructor and Certified Multi-Pitch Instructor.

Pretty hard. Each discipline involves at minimum three courses/exams. To make it to the next step, you must pass your previous exam and build out your resume of impressive climbs or ski descents before applying to the next step. It takes most guides at least three years to become certified in a single discipline.

If you’re a fully certified guide in rock, ski, alpine, ice, or multi pitch then you must fill out the application at the bottom of this page. Additionally, there is a $10/year listing fee.
